ARCHITECTURAL AND ENGINEERING
DESIGN RECOMMENDATIONS

GENERAL

1. THE FIBERGLASS SPA SHELL is laminated in one piece and includes all fittings, skimmer, light shell, handrail sockets and drains. No holes are cut in after lamination. The Spa is piped with NSF listed PVC 40 pipe and stubbed out at the skimmer end. The piping is tested, Jets laminated, then the Spa is foam insulated.

2. EQUIPMENT PACKAGE is pre-wired and pre-plumbed and components are installed on a galvanized frame. The Package includes the electrical panel, time clock, GFI light breaker, pumps, filter and heater. THE EQUIPMENT PACKAGE IS TO BE INSTALLED WITHIN 35' OF THE SPA on concrete blocks 4" or more above planned finished grade. If a maximum separation of 35' between Spa and Equipment Package is not practical, please consult with Twirl Jet Spas for a solution.

SPECIAL - The equipment Package must not be installed more than 2' above the Spa water level. It may be installed lower.

3. RECESS OR ON-DECK

RECESS - On Recess installations, the Spa is installed on a 4" sand bed. Sand is used to back-fill.

ON-DECK - For ON-DECK installation a galvanized frame is laminated to the bottom of the Spa. A 6" high waterproof pan is required under the Spa to prevent damage caused from over filling the Spa or leaking from washing down the deck.

4. DECK AROUND SPA - COMMERCIAL - Local requirements may vary. Minimum is a 4' deck on the step end and one side. 2' is required on the back wall to permit piping the Spa. A hose bib may be required in the Spa area. The deck floor must be non-porous and slip resistant. Check the Health Department for local code requirements.

5. PIPING between the Spa and the Equipment Package shall be NSF listed, pressure PVC 40 pipe. JOINTS MUST BE CUT SQUARELY AND JOINED WITH PURPLE PRIMER AND HEAVY GREY PVC CEMENT. Instruction sheet on piping will be supplied to the plumber. Check local codes for approval of PVC pipe. Copper my be required in some locations.

6. SHOWER: Although not always required, it is advisable to plan a shower as near the entrance to the Spa as practical. This is inexpensive as water and sewer are already in the area.

7. ELECTRICAL:

A. POWER SUPPLY - All components in the Twirl Jet Spa Equipment Package are UL Listed. Each model carries the national "Electrical Testing Laboratory" (ETL) listing. Please advise Twirl Jet Spas of power supply available.

B. CONTROLS - On all installations a 1/2" conduit is required from the equipment panel to the controls switches. Code requires that the switches be located more than 5' from the Spa. Locate near the Step end of the Spa.

COMMERCIAL SPAS - Install one, two gang switch box at 4' and one 6' above the deck. Six, #14 colored wires are required.

SWIM SPA MODEL 8-14-4SS - Requires the same as Commercial Spas.

SWIM SPA MODEL 10-20-4SS - Three, two gang boxes are required. Install one above the other at 4' and the third at 6' above the deck. Eight, #14 colored wires are required.

RESIDENTIAL SPA AND SWIM SPAS - Jets are controlled by air switches in the coping. Install a two gang box 4' above the deck for light and power cut off. Six, #14 colored wires are required.

NOTE: Twirl Jet Spas supply all the controls, stainless steel plates and the wiring diagram. Local codes may have additional requirements.

C. SPA LIGHT: All Twirl Jet Spas have as standard a 120 volt light, GFI protected with a 50' cord. The cord stub is 3/4" IPS for either PVC or brass. If the Equipment Package is lower than the Spa a "J" box with light cord will be required 10" above Spa. A #8 stranded Copper wire is required in the conduit for grounding.

D. BOND WIRE - A #8 solid bare copper wire is required on the outside to bond the light shell and handrails to the ground bar behind the Equipment panel.

E. GAS HEATER - Connect 120 volt wires at heater for electronic ignition (IID).

8. WATER is to be supplied thru a 3/4" pipe to a double check valve and hose bib which is to be installed on the left side wall of the Equipment Package. A 1/2" type L soft copper pipe is required from the double check valve to the copper stub-out on the Spa skimmer to supply the water level float and the over the coping fill line. A hose bib may be required in the Spa room by the Health Department.

9. GAS - Run correct size code approved gas pipe.

10. SEWER REQUIREMENTS - COMMERCIAL

BACKWASH: Stub a 3" drain 2' above the deck behind the Equipment Package on the back wall. Models 10-15-4 and 10-20-4 require a 4" drain. This is also used to empty the Spa.

FLOOR DRAIN: One required 48" from the back wall of Equipment Room, plus Spa deck drains as required.

SPA OVERFLOW: A 1-1/2" PVC pipe is stubbed out of the skimmer. 3" below the top of the coping. This must be run to an indirect drain.

ON-DECK PAN DRAIN: This must be run to an indirect drain.

11. VENTILATION is required over the Spa. When the installation is indoors, due to moisture and chemical vapors, this ventilation should not be part of the main ventilation system. The fan should exhaust to the outside. The Equipment Room also requires ventilation. OPTIONAL - A circuit can be provided so the fan will turn on when the Jets timer is turned on. A heat recovery dehumidification system is available.

TS-TECHNICAL SUPPORT
SPECIFICATIONS - GENERAL INFORMATION

MODELS - There are 7 Standard Spa models plus two Swim Spas completely laminated with durable fiberglass. The finish is artic white. INSTALLATION INFORMATION

The finest Therapy Spa System, poorly planned and improperly installed will reflect badly on everyone involved. This is why Twirl Jet Spas wants to review the plans.

There are two methods of installation. "Recess" when the Spa is installed in a sand bed with the top Flush or Semi Flush with the deck or "On Deck" where a hot dipped galvanized frame is laminated to the spa bottom. The frame, separated by a drain pan, rests directly on a concrete deck or is supported by steel or masonry.

RECESSED - when the Spa is recessed in the ground on a sand bed and the Equipment Package is installed on grade.

Note - The total weight of the Spa rests on the 4" sand bed. The coping lip bears no weight. Sand is backfilled around the Spa. If there is a potential underground high water problem, please call us for an installation solution.

The procedure is as follows:

1. Before any concrete is poured - dig a hole for the Spa, place four inches of sand in the bottom, lower Spa in place to the correct grade level and location.

2. Install the Equipment Package on 8" x 8" x 16" blocks 4" above finished grade. No anchoring is required.

3. Dig a trench between the Spa and the Equipment Package and pipe the Spa to the Package as per instructions supplied to the installing contractor. Do not start piping until both the Spa and Equipment are in correct locations.

4. Connect utilities to the Equipment. Fill the Spa and make all tests for leaks and operations.

5. Sand backfill to grade around the Spa and piping, properly compacting. The Spa can now be emptied (or left full), covered and ready for Start-Up.

ON-DECK INSTALLATION - when the Spa is supported by a concrete deck or a support under Spa frame from the floor below.

For ON-DECK installations Twirl Jet Spas will laminate a hot dipped galvanized frame to the Spa bottom.

Also valves are installed or included for equipment installation below water level. All the weight bears down on the frame. To insure against damage from overflowing the Spa a 6" deep waterproof enclosure must be installed under the Spa with a drain.

1. Install Spa in correct location. Check for level. If shims are required use plastic, fiber or other non-rusting shims.

2. Install the Equipment Package on 8" x 8" x 16" blocks. No anchoring is required.

3. Pipe between the Spa and the Equipment as per instructions supplied to the installing contractor.

4. Connect the utilities to the Equipment, fill the Spa with water and make all tests for leaks and operation.

5. Empty or leave full and cover until ready to start up.

Most health departments require the coping to be 2" above the finished deck. The coping acts as a "Grab Rail" and prevents deck water from running in to the Spa when washing down the deck. The 3" vertical with a 1/2" return permits easy installation.

THE EQUIPMENT ROOM

See Sweet’s printed catalog 13170/TWI for room size. These are minimum dimensions to meet the National Electrical Code and to be able to service the Equipment.

The package is elevated 4" or more from the finished floor to permit water flow under the package and servicing. Waterproof floor is required.

EQUIPMENT ELEVATION

Do not install the base of the Equipment Package more than 2' above the Spa water level. The Equipment Package may be installed lower than the Spa. Valves for servicing the Equipment are then added.

Note - Our sales agreement prohibits any alteration of factory piping or wiring without written approval.

SPA ELEVATION

Most health departments require the coping to be 2" above the finished deck. The coping acts as a "Grab Rail" and prevents deck water from running in to the Spa when washing down the deck. The 3" vertical coping with a 1/2" Horizontal lip or edge permits easy installation. The Lip is within 1/8" of level around the Spa and can be used as a screed for concrete. The Spa will then be 3" above the concrete. This allows room for thinset, tile and variances required by drainage. In some circumstances, such as, residential indoors, raising tile flush with top of Spa may look better.

SPA ELEVATION

Most health departments require the coping to be 2" above-the finished deck. The coping acts as a "Grab Rail" and prevents deck water from running in to the Spa when washing down the deck. On pre-poured flat decks, the Spa 1/2" Lip can be set flush with the concrete. The Spa would be 3" above the concrete. This allows room for thinset, tile and variances required by drainage. In some circumstances, such as, residential indoors, raising tile flush with top of Spa may look better.
